  6. A disciple of the pragmatist philosopher John Dewey at Columbia
  7. University and a faculty member there for 42 years, Hook, a
  8. Marxist scholar, was among the earliest critics of Stalinism.
  9. His opposition to extremism in any form was a major theme in his
  10. 1987 autobiography, Out of Step: An Unquiet Life in the 20th
  11. Century.
